Web Design Principles

January 16, 2008

Web Design is a complex form of design, but still draws key principles from design as a discipline. In summary, these might be:

  • Contrast
Web design depends on contrast in colour, size, shape, space, position, and more.
  • Precedence
You can guide a use’s eye through a web design by use of contrast.
  • Alignment
Website’s are commonly designed using an underlying grid system to ensuring elements line up, making you design more aesthetically pleasing and your content more digestible.
  • Convention
It’s important to consider what standards are commonly known across web designs, and to adhere to these, except when specifically breaking convention to achieve a given aim.
  • Consistency
Any interactive interface should be consistent in how it plays with it’s users – web design is no different.
